Frequent Questions

How does the Mosquito Slayer work?

The Slayer mimics a large mammal.

Most mosquitoes are active at night. Mosquitoes will rest in dark places under trees etc. as too much direct sunlight kills them.

When the sun goes down the mosquitoes will come out of these resting places searching for blood.

The mosquitoes are attracted to the Slayer believing it to be a mammal. Once the mosquito reaches the front of the trap it is vacuumed into the trap, forced into the water and drowned.

Where does the Mosquito that bites me come from?

Mosquitoes can only detect you from a distance of 30 - 35 metres. Generally speaking the Mosquito that bites you wil have lived and bred within 30 - 35 metres of where you were bitten. Other mosquitoes may have been blown into the area by strong winds.

How long does it take to dramatically reduce the mosquitoes in my area?

The Mosquito Slayer can only trap the mosquitoes, sandflies and midges that are ready for a blood meal to enable them to lay their eggs. SEE Life Cycle

The life cycle of a mosquito is 2 - 3 weeks. The Slayer traps the female mosquitoes before they can lay their eggs. Naturally it cannot trap the eggs, lava or pupae.

Allowing for the eggs that have already been laid to develop into adults this will take between 6 – 8 weeks.

Does the Carbon Dioxide (CO²) used contribute to the Green House effect?

When the (CO²) is extracted from the atmosphere all that you are doing is recycling the gas back into the atmosphere.

What is Octenol?

Octenol is a naturally occurring by-product that comes from plants and some animals, (pheromone and kairomone) such as oxen and cows, which ingest large amounts of vegetable matter. For more information Click Octenol

How many eggs do Mosquitoes lay?

On average the mosquito lays about 300 eggs. A sand fly lays about 30 eggs.

Why do mosquitoes feed on blood?

Female mosquitoes imbibe blood so that their eggs can mature prior to laying. It serves no nourishment function. Males do not take blood meals at all. In order to obtain energy, both male and female mosquitoes feed on plant nectars much the same as bees.

How much blood does a mosquito take in a meal?

Mosquitoes imbibe anywhere from 0.001 to 0.01 millilitre.

How long do mosquitoes live?

Lifespan vary by species. Most adult female mosquitoes live 2-3 weeks.

How can Mosquitoes find me even in the dark?

Carbon dioxide is the most universally recognized mosquito attractant and draws mosquitoes from up to 35 metres away. We all breathe out carbon dioxide. When female mosquitoes sense carbon dioxide they usually adopt a zigzagging flight path within the plume of carbon dioxide to locate its source.

Once in the general vicinity of a potential host, other cues predominate, including body odours (sweat, lactic acid, etc.) and heat. Visual stimuli, such as movement, also factor into host seeking. Odours produced by skin micro flora also play a part in inducing the mosquito to land.

Bigger people are often more attractive to mosquitoes because they are larger targets and they produce more mosquito attractants, namely CO2 and lactic acid.
